Talk Title: Data science and neural networks

Talk Abstract: Machine learning, neural networks and deep learning are becoming increasingly ubiquitous in science and technology. What are they all about? How do applied mathematicians contribute to this wide branch of artificial intelligence? Is it an area I may be into? Am I well prepared to try something out? This talk aims to help answer these questions via exploring varieties of real-life applications and potential research projects. The talk content will be accessible to a general audience with reasonable knowledge of linear algebra, differential equations, data fitting and optimization.
