Abstract: For several decades, people have been interested in the conservation of species that have been reduced to small populations. More recently, the types of analyses that have gone into the creation of Species Survival Plans for endangered species are being applied to the management of rare varieties of domestic species that are deemed to have either agricultural or cultural value. This talk will provide an introduction to the sorts of calculations involved in decision-making for small populations, with results presented for a rare breed of dog.
