The descent statistic on permutations was introduced by MacMahon in the early 1900s, and has appeared in various parts of mathematics since. We will discuss a generalization of this statistic to labeled binary trees, and discuss connections with areas as diverse as enumeration of rook placements to symmetric group actions on hyperplane arrangements.
