Abstract

Getting Connected, Learning From Others, and Build-ing Community During A Time of Transition

The Conference for Future Oklahoma Mathe-matics Educators was funded by a small state level grant andbrought together pre-service secondary mathematics teachers(PSSTs), first-year mathematics teachers (ECMTs), and selectedveteran teachers from across the state. This one-day conferenceprovided a foundation for developing a larger statewide studentorganization along with greater awareness of and access to exist-ing resources for classroom teachers. Data was collected to pro-vide insight into the participants perceived needs as they movefrom student to teacher. Findings from the preliminary qualita-tive analysis of this pilot study suggests that while pre-serviceand first-year teachers may identify the same needs, what theyneed to know about the topic may actually differ greatly. Thedata also suggests both PSSTs as well as ECMTs seem to haveshallow and fragile pedagogical understandings that lead to alack of ability to transfer domain general examples into mathspecific contexts. Future research should include both a deeperlook into ones perceptions of their needs, how these needs changethroughout their transition, and what are the best professionaldevelopment experiences to support this transition.
