Sequences are one of the most fundamental data structures, naturally occurring in a wide variety of contexts.  Given a sequence, it's natural to ask, "What comes next?"  I will give some historical attempts to answer this question, outline the fundamentals of deep learning, and describe a particular application of the so-called "transformer" architecture. This project is joint work with Chris Deotte and Gordon Honerkamp-Smith.
