Abstract: Continued fractions have fascinated mathematicians for centuries, if not millennia. Many famous mathematical concepts such as the golden ratio, Euclid’s algorithm, Archimedes’ cattle problem, and the irrationality of pi, can be described in terms of continued fractions. In this guided tour of such fractions, we will explore the relationship between simple continued fractions and the golden ratio. This will lead us to applications in the realm of Diophantine approximation, including Hurwitz's Theorem and Markov constants.
