Abstract

The Littlewood-Richardson Rule

Asymmetric function is a multivariable polynomial that is invariant under any permutation of the indeterminates. I will define a special basis for the space of symmetric functions called the Schur basis. The Littlewood-Richardson rule precisely describes how to multiply two elements of this basis. I will present the rule, demonstrate its use and present an unexpected application.
