Abstract

The Littlewood-Richardson Rule

Asymmetric functionis a multivariable polynomial that is invariant underany permutation of the indeterminates. I will define a special basis for thespace of symmetric functions called theSchur basis. TheLittlewood-Richardson rule precisely describes how to multiply twoelements of this basis. I will present the rule, demonstrate its use andpresent an unexpected application.
