Abstract

Introduction to tropical mathematics

In tropical mathematics, we change the definition of the arithmetic operations: plus is replaced by taking the minimum, and times by plus. In a surprising number of cases, this seemingly violent transformation actually preserves many essential features of a problem, and we can glean insights about a problem by passing back and forth between its usual and its tropical formulation. I’ll introduce the basics of the subject and give examples of applications, many of geometric flavour.
